Because I've been asked "Why is the USD so strong?" repeatedly throughout my finance career

During my finance career, I have often been asked, because I’ve lived in 5 different countries now, on my opinion on whether the domestic currency of a nation will weaken or strengthen against the US dollar or against another fiat currency like the Euro, the Australian dollar or the Brazilian real. Usually the person asking this question also will preface the question with the qualifier that he or she was watching the news and heard that the US dollar was going to strengthen. The response I always have without fail about any news of a “strengthening” US dollar is, “Compared to what?” Thus, the purpose of writing this article is to provide everyone with a tool to answer the question of USD “strength” against their own currency once and for all so that no one ever has to ask me this question again for the rest of my life.
